A source-checked 2026 mobile app growth benchmark: subscription conversion, trial behavior, acquisition definitions, and a practical cohort-comparison method.
This is a public-source editorial synthesis, not proprietary Sharply Labs client cohort data. First published March 1, 2026; materially revised October 2, 2026. RevenueCat's 2026 report chiefly analyzes 2025 app performance. March cross-platform CPI, retention and creative-cadence figures could not be verified in their cited primary reports and are not current benchmarks. The original JSON and chart URLs remain archival files.
A useful mobile app growth benchmark compares the same event, denominator, cohort, market and observation window. RevenueCat's 2026 subscription study reports median download-to-paid conversion by Day 35 of 10.7% for hard-paywall apps and 2.1% for freemium apps. These are descriptive observations across different product models, not forecasts or causal evidence.
RevenueCat's 2026 report records median download-to-trial by Day 30 of 9.1% for Business subscription apps and 4.4% for Gaming subscription apps. Trial-to-paid medians are 42.5% for 17–32-day trials and 25.5% for trials of four days or less. These denominators and windows differ; do not use the numbers interchangeably or infer that trial length alone caused the difference.
Apple defines App Store conversion rate as total downloads divided by unique impressions, including first-time downloads and redownloads. Google Ads distinguishes an install from a first open and uses conversion windows. Reconcile the event and attribution rules before comparing channel CPI or downstream conversion.
Match the population; match the event; identify the funnel break; compare cohorts at the same age using net proceeds and cash timing; and set a decision threshold before reallocating spend. An illustrative $20,000 cohort with 8,000 attributed first opens costs $2.50 per first open; 400 eventual paying subscribers would cost $50 each before refunds and net proceeds. This is not a Sharply Labs client result.
Public subscription medians cannot establish a universal channel winner or profitability for an individual app. Use owned spend, store analytics, attribution, activation, paid conversion, retention and mature net proceeds. We omit unverifiable universal CPI, retention, creative-fatigue and blended ROAS values. Qualified app teams can discuss an evidence review and leave with a prioritized measurement and experiment agenda, not a promised outcome.
